• Dec. 13, 2003- Suddam Hussein is captured by U.S. troops
• Jan. – Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake spark controversy over their revealing half-time performance during Superbowl XXXVIII
• 2004 Grammy Award winners: Record of the Year- “Clocks” Coldplay; Album of the Year- "Speakerboxx/ The Love Below" Outkast
• "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" wins Academy Award for Best Picture
• Feb. 25- Mel Gibson’s controversial film "The Passion of the Christ" is released sparking criticism of Gibson and accusing the film of being anti-Semitic
• Mar. 11- Al Qaeda assumes responsibility for attacks in Spain that left 200 dead
• Apr. 12- Israeli prime Minister Ariel Sharon announces plans to withdraw from the Gaza Strip
• May 17- Massachusetts becomes first state to legalize gay marriages
• June- Michael Moore’s film Fahrenheit 9/11 finds a huge following for its criticism of George W. Bush and the government after the September 11th attacks
• Martha Stewart’s trial begins and is sentenced to prison in July
